The red-rumped agouti, also known as the golden-rumped agouti, orange-rumped agouti or Brazilian agouti, is a species of agouti from the family Dasyproctidae. Its coarse hair is covered with an oily substance that acts like a raincoat. Fetal vessels run from the umbilical cord to the subplacenta through the central excavation (arrow). With the progress of gestation some initial characteristics of the subplacenta change. Contributed by Leanne Guenther. To study the microvasculature of the subplacenta, an umbilical artery was injected with Mercox™ CL-2R (Okenshoji Co., Ltd, Tokyo, Japan) as previously described [11]. Plasticity in the timing of activity in the Red-rumped Agouti, Dasyprocta leporina (Mammalia: Rodentia), in the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil. Different colours were injected in a uterine vein, a uterine artery, and the umbilical vein. Mossman HW. The Red-rumped Agouti, a member of the rodent family, is native to the rainforests of Central and South America. Vascular organization of the hystricomorph placenta: a comparative study in the agouti, capybara, guinea pig, paca and rock cavy. The cytoplasm contains few mitochondria, some rough endoplasmic reticulum, and an occasional Golgi apparatus. Generating an ePub file may take a long time, please be patient. The ePub format is best viewed in the iBooks reader. The Red-rumped Agouti (Dasyprocta leporine) is locally known as the Akuri in Guyana. (B) Later in gestation. The placenta is spherical and reddish and on closer inspection is seen to be divided into lobes separated by interlobar trophoblast (Figure (Figure1C).1C). (B) Fetal mesenchyme and wall of blood vessel immunostain for vimentin. Davies et al. Comp Biochem Physiol A Mol Integr Physiol. The subplacenta does persist until the end of gestation, but extensive degenerative changes occur towards term (not shown). (A) Transverse section of the placenta in midpregnancy showing the labyrinth (lab) of the main placenta and the subplacenta (sub pl). There is experimental evidence from the guinea pig and degu to support this hypothesis [20,21]. This is consistent with a secretory function as suggested in a study of chinchilla giant cells by Tibbitts and Birge [37]. It does not, however, address the function of the syncytiotrophoblast. Nakav S, Jablonka-Shariff A, Kaner S, Chadna-Mohanty P, Grotjan HE, Ben-Menahem D. The LHβ gene of several mammals embeds a carboxyl-terminal peptide-like sequence revealing a critical role for mucin oligosaccharides in the evolution of lutropin to chorionic gonadotropin in the animal phyla. Dasyprocta punctata. Measurements of fetus, umbilical cord and placenta in the specimens of red-rumped agouti used for the present study. In: Wynn RM, editor. (A) Clusters of multinucleated giant cells (GC) are found in the transition zone between the subplacenta (sub pl) and decidua (dec). Burgess SM, Tam WH. Endocrine control of parturition. Roberts CM, Perry JS. (D) Following treatment with amylase there is only a moderate decrease in the positive reaction of syncytiotrophoblast. Scale bars: 0.5 mm. Range. The maned three-toed sloth (Bradypus torquatus) is an animal from the Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection. It has pink ears and a pink nose with… They were then refrigerated in 20% gelatin. The front feet have 4 toes and the back have 3. These lacunae seem to be connected to the intercellular spaces of the cytotrophoblast layer, which lie directly beneath fetal capillaries. Lifespan: Up to 17 years. Microvasculature of agouti subplacenta in midgestation. We are experimenting with display styles that make it easier to read articles in PMC. Tam WH. Their ears are small and round. The maned sloth is now found only in the Atlantic coastal rainforest of southeastern Brazil, although it was once also found further north. Females will give birth to one, two or three babies in a litter. The fine structure of the chinchilla placenta. (A) Syncytiotrophoblast sends microvillous projections into an extensive system of lacunae (lac). The red-rumped agouti (Dasyprocta leporina) is an animal from the Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection. already built in. Their product is released into the elaborate network of lacunae. The study was based on 9 placentae from 6 red-rumped agoutis collected from early in midgestation to near term of pregnancy (Table (Table1).1). The cytoplasm of the syncytiotrophoblast is eosinophilic, with basophilic granules, and the nuclei are irregular. (A) Early in gestation. The hystricognath rodents (Suborder Hystricomorpha, Infraorder Hystricognathi [1]) appeared in the Eocene and underwent an extensive radiation in the Miocene. The two animals share a common ancestor and are found in South and Central America. The male is very aggressive toward other males. Thus a single large artery runs through the central excavation from the umbilical cord to the subplacenta (Figure 1A, C). Miglino MA, Carter AM, Ambrosio CE, Bonatelli M, De Oliveira MF, Dos Santos Ferraz RH, Rodrigues RF, Santos TC. Forests. (A) Cytotrophoblasts (cyt tr) rest on a basal lamina (bl) that is closely apposed to the endothelium of a fetal capillary. When Neoprene latex is injected into the umbilical artery, it fills the vessels of the subplacenta (white colour in Figure Figure1B).1B). The Red-Rumped Agouti is a stout brown-furred animal, with darker spots on the upper body. They are brownish with darker spots on the upper body. The subplacental syncytiotrophoblast contains electron dense inclusions that likely are secretion granules as argued by Wolfer and Kaufmann [12]. Distribution. Mess A. The functions that have been ascribed to the subplacenta include hormone production [9,10]. (B) A skein of vessel branches. The functions that have been attributed to the subplacenta include hormone production. OUR DATA: We use the most recent data from these primary sources: AnAge, UMICH, Max Planck, PanTHERIA, Arkive, UKC, AKC. They bury excess nuts and fruits for use when food is scarce. Trophoblast giant cells of agouti placenta in midgestation. [9,10] remarked upon the strongly positive PAS reaction of the guinea pig subplacenta. Red-rumped agoutis behave uneasy and act suspicious of their surroundings, in constant observation of their environment with keen caution (Dubost 1998). (B) Placenta injected with Neoprene latex to show the vascularization of the subplacenta. For transmission electron microscopy, small samples were fixed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde in 0.1 M phosphate buffer, pH 7.4, washed in buffer and post-fixed in phosphate-buffered osmium tetroxide, pH 7.4 (Polysciences, Warrington, PA, USA). Comparative morphogenesis of the fetal membranes and accessory uterine structures. Enders RK. (B) Later in gestation. http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0. In Brazil all agoutis are often called "cutia". The subplacenta is separated from the main placenta by a layer of connective tissue (fetal mesenchyme), and lamellae of connective tissue support the trophoblast. Ultrastructure of a placental giant cell in the agouti in midgestation. Length: Up to 2 feet. Northeastern South America. In transverse section the main placenta and the subplacenta can be distinguished by their colour and form (Figure (Figure1A).1A). The description of the ultrastructure of agouti subplacenta is based on material from the middle of gestation. Clusters of multinucleated giant cells are found near the margin of the subplacenta in the transition zone between it and the decidua (Figure (Figure5A).5A). Red-rumped Agouti (Dasyprocta agouti) captive Savannah, Rupununi GUYANA South America RANGE: South America from Venezuela to Bahia, Brazil east of the Rio Negro and Rio Madeira.
